The beginning Elephant Dental B.V. originates from a commercial enterprise named Bermudes, which was established in 1970 by Mr M.G.N. Brouwers (left in the picture), initially focusing on importing prosthetic materials for crowns and bridges from the US for the Dutch market. The Dutch dental industry had hardly developed here and the US, Germany and Switzerland set the tone. Nevertheless, Elephant Edelmetaal began producing alloys for dental applications in 1977 under the supervision of Prof J.M. van der Zel (right in the picture), because it was felt that the Netherlands possessed sufficient capital, knowledge, manpower and business acumen.
Taking control of the production of alloys soon proved to be a success and the company developed rapidly. In order to guarantee the quality of the restoration – the end product – Elephant wanted to offer its customers material systems that were geared to one another. The company also started production of investments so they could offer dental technicians a complete system. Corporate philosophyFrom that moment on, Elephant’s corporate philosophy read as follows: "Elephant Dental is continually working on solutions for dental issues by developing, producing and selling advanced dental products at a competitive price. All Elephant products are geared to one another, forming a single cohesive system that guarantees the quality of the final product for dental technicians, dentists and patients." The Carrara systemAs part of this philosophy, Elephant started developing and producing ceramic materials in 1984. In 1990, this led to the development of the Carrara system, which Elephant has patented worldwide. The Carrara system comprises a range of eco-friendly alloys, onto which a specially developed ceramic can be fired. The Carrara system was a technological breakthrough at the time and led the field for many years. Elephant Dental delivers products developed and produced in-house directly to dental laboratories in Germany and the Benelux, supported by a field organisation with representatives and technical advisers. Elephant distributes its own products to dental laboratories all over the world through a network of selected, exclusive dealers. Moreover, Elephant Dental is distributor in the Benelux for all dental products made by Dentsply Prosthetics, a Dentsply International franchise. This includes all products made by DeguDent, Dentsply Austenal, Dentsply Ceramco and Dentsply Trubyte.
